Points
   When melodrama ruled the stage, "points" were the actor's stock in trade. Playing for points was a way of underscoring certain lines, poses, or dramatic moments to get a reaction from the audience. Actors who knew how to perform that kind of flourish still trod the boards in the modernist era, but critic John Mason Brown noted (Moses and Brown 1934, 303) that "'points' are more or less looked down on by the moderns."
